NMMS Scholarship Rajasthan 2026–27: Eligibility, Exam, Amount and Application Updates

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), commonly called NMMS, helps academically capable students from lower-income families continue their education after Class 8. In Rajasthan, students are selected through a state-level examination, while the scholarship application and renewal process is managed through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

Selected students can receive ₹12,000 per year for studies from Class 9 to Class 12, subject to the scheme's eligibility and renewal conditions.

Latest update — 20 October 2026: Applications for the 2026–27 scholarship cycle on NSP remain open until 31 October 2026. This deadline is for students who have already qualified through the state selection process and are applying for a fresh scholarship or renewal. The next Rajasthan Class 8 selection-exam dates have not yet been announced on the official schedule page.

What Is the NMMS Scholarship?

NMMS is a Government of India scholarship scheme designed to reduce school dropout after Class 8. It supports students who demonstrate academic ability but may face financial difficulties in continuing secondary and higher-secondary education.

Students do not receive the scholarship simply because their family income is below the limit. They must qualify in the state selection examination, meet the educational conditions, fall within the applicable state scholarship quota and complete the required scholarship application and verification process.

The national scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships annually across India. Rajasthan receives a state-specific allocation, so selection is competitive.

Who Is Eligible for NMMS in Rajasthan?

1. Class and School Requirements

To appear in the state selection examination, a student must be regularly studying in Class 8 in an eligible school.

The accepted school categories are:

  • Government schools
  • Government-aided schools
  • Local-body schools

For the scholarship award, the student must continue as a regular student in an eligible institution from Class 9 onwards.

2. Minimum Marks in Class 7

  • General and other candidates: At least 55% marks or equivalent grade
  • SC/ST candidates: At least 50% marks or equivalent grade

These percentages relate to eligibility for the Class 8 selection test. Students must also meet the separate Class 8 result conditions at the scholarship-award stage.

3. Family Income

The total annual parental income from all sources must not exceed ₹3,50,000.

Income documents must support the information supplied in the application. Parents should ensure that earnings from all applicable sources are included according to the official certificate and scheme instructions.

Important: Some older Rajasthan NMMS pages or form templates still display an earlier ₹1.5 lakh limit. The revised Ministry of Education guidelines and its October 2026 announcement confirm the updated ₹3.5 lakh income ceiling.

4. Schools Not Covered

The scheme excludes students studying in private schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and government residential institutions where boarding, lodging and education are provided under the specified arrangements. Rajasthan's eligibility page also lists Sainik Schools as excluded.

Check the official classification of your school rather than relying only on whether it receives some form of government assistance.

Official eligibility: Read National NMMSS Guidelines (PDF) and Rajasthan NMMS Eligibility Criteria.

How Much Scholarship Will a Student Receive?

The scheme provides ₹12,000 per academic year, equivalent to ₹1,000 per month for calculating the annual benefit. It is not a promise of a separate payment every month.

Eligible awardees may receive the scholarship from Class 9 through Class 12, for a maximum of four years. This represents a potential total of ₹48,000 when all four years' conditions are satisfied.

The scholarship is transferred to the beneficiary's bank account through the government's Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system after the applicable verification and sanction processes.

Important: Selection in the examination alone does not guarantee immediate payment. The student must complete the NSP application, satisfy the conditions and pass the required verification stages.

Important Dates: Rajasthan Exam vs NSP Scholarship

NSP Scholarship Applications — Academic Year 2026–27

  • Applications opened: 1 June 2026
  • Last date for student application: 31 October 2026
  • Institute Nodal Officer verification deadline (L1): 15 November 2026
  • District Nodal Officer verification deadline (L2): 30 November 2026

These dates apply to the national scholarship application or renewal process for eligible selected students.

Rajasthan State Selection Examination

The Rajasthan Shala Darpan schedule currently displays the earlier state selection-exam cycle:

  • Previous examination application period: 15 September to 10 October 2025
  • Previous examination date: 16 November 2025

That examination was associated with the state's NMMS Examination 2026 cycle. These are historical dates, not a new application window.

For Class 8 students preparing for the next examination: Check Rajasthan's official NMMS schedule for the next announcement. Do not use 31 October 2026 as your state selection-exam deadline.

Rajasthan NMMS Examination Pattern

The state selection examination consists of two objective papers: the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

Mental Ability Test (MAT)

  • Questions: 90 multiple-choice questions
  • Standard duration: 90 minutes
  • Focus: Reasoning, logical thinking and problem-solving ability

Topics include analogies, classification, number series, pattern recognition and hidden figures.

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

  • Questions: 90 multiple-choice questions
  • Standard duration: 90 minutes
  • Subjects: Mathematics, Science and Social Studies
  • Level: Class 7 and Class 8 curriculum

The two papers together contain 180 questions. Eligible children with disabilities receive additional time according to the applicable rules.

Preparation tip: Use Rajasthan's latest published syllabus to identify the required chapters. Previous-year papers help students understand question types and practise completing a full test within the permitted time.

What Marks Are Needed for Selection?

Under the national NMMSS guidelines, students must obtain the prescribed qualifying marks in MAT and SAT taken together:

  • General qualifying threshold: 40% aggregate
  • SC/ST qualifying threshold: 32% aggregate

At the scholarship selection stage, a student must also have at least 55% in Class 8, or 50% for SC/ST candidates.

Qualifying is not the same as being selected. Scholarship awards are subject to state quota, merit ranking, reservation provisions and other eligibility requirements. A student who reaches the minimum score may still not receive a scholarship.

How Selected Students Apply on the National Scholarship Portal

Students who qualify through the state selection process must complete the fresh scholarship application for Class 9 or submit a renewal application for the appropriate higher class.

  1. Open National Scholarship Portal — Students.
  2. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) if the student does not already have a valid OTR number.
  3. Sign in using the student's OTR credentials.
  4. Choose the correct academic year and fresh or renewal application option.
  5. Select the National Means Cum Merit Scholarship scheme.
  6. Enter the student's school, qualification, identification and other required information accurately.
  7. Complete the supporting-document and banking details requested by the portal.
  8. Review the application, submit it and retain its reference details.
  9. Ask the school to check that the application is verified by the Institute Nodal Officer within the deadline.
  10. Track the application through the subsequent district-level verification stage.

For 2026–27, do not wait beyond 31 October 2026 to submit the student application. The L1 and L2 verification deadlines are later dates for the respective authorities, not extra application days for students.

Documents and Information to Keep Ready

The exact document-upload requirements are displayed by the applicable state or NSP application process. Families can prepare the following records to avoid unnecessary delays:

  • Class 7 marksheet for selection-exam eligibility
  • Class 8 result and state selection-exam details for fresh scholarship claims
  • Current school enrolment details and school identification code
  • Valid parental income certificate
  • Applicable SC/ST or other supporting certificates
  • Disability certificate, where relevant
  • Student identification details required for OTR and authentication
  • Active mobile number and bank-account information for scholarship processing
  • Previous scholarship application details for renewal

Before submission: Match the student's name, school records, identification and bank details carefully. A mismatch can delay verification or benefit transfer.

How to Continue NMMS Scholarship up to Class 12

NMMS is renewable, not an unconditional four-year payment.

  • Class 9: Begin the scholarship after state selection, required Class 8 performance, enrolment and successful NSP application.
  • Class 10: Clear promotion from Class 9 to Class 10 in the first attempt is required, along with timely NSP renewal.
  • Class 11: Obtain at least 60% in the Class 10 examination, relaxed to 55% for SC/ST students, and complete renewal requirements.
  • Class 12: Clear promotion from Class 11 to Class 12 in the first attempt and renew within the prescribed period.

The student must continue studying regularly in an eligible school. Interruptions in studies and failure to complete renewal within the prescribed period can result in discontinuation under the scheme rules.

Important correction: Revised national guidelines removed the earlier separate 55% requirement for Class 9 and Class 11 renewal. The Class 10 examination marks and first-attempt promotion rules remain important.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing state selection-exam registration with NSP scholarship applications.
  • Using old income limits instead of the revised ₹3.5 lakh rule.
  • Assuming students of private or excluded residential schools are eligible.
  • Believing that minimum qualifying exam marks guarantee selection.
  • Waiting until the verification deadline to submit the student application.
  • Ignoring school or district verification after NSP submission.
  • Failing to renew the scholarship in a later academic year.
  • Entering inconsistent student or bank details.
  • Paying an unofficial person who promises guaranteed selection or scholarship payment.
