The PM Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (PM-YASASVI) is a Government of India programme administered by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The scheme covers education at multiple stages, including Classes 9–10, Classes 11–12 and higher education. Its Top Class School component can meet approved school expenses up to ₹75,000 per year for Classes 9–10 and ₹1,25,000 for Classes 11–12. Other components offer different benefits.

However, the National Scholarship Portal has instructed students from Rajasthan, Kerala and Karnataka to wait before submitting fresh school applications. What Is PM-YASASVI?

PM-YASASVI is an umbrella scheme, which means it brings multiple educational assistance programmes under one broader government initiative. Students should not assume that all applicants receive the same amount, have the same qualifications or use identical application dates.

The ministry identifies five components:

  1. Pre-Matric Scholarship: Assistance for eligible OBC, EBC and DNT students studying in Classes 9 and 10 under the applicable state or UT implementation.
  2. Post-Matric Scholarship: Assistance for eligible students pursuing education after Class 10, including various recognised higher-secondary and higher-education courses.
  3. Top Class School Education: Support for meritorious students in ministry-identified Top Class Schools from Class 9 to Class 12.
  4. Top Class College Education: Financial assistance for eligible students admitted to designated higher-education institutions.
  5. Hostel Construction: Support for building hostel facilities. This is an institutional infrastructure component, not an individual cash scholarship application.

Important: The ₹75,000 and ₹1,25,000 figures belong specifically to Top Class School Education. They are not the benefit amounts for every PM-YASASVI sub-scheme.

Top Class School Scholarship: Who Is Eligible?

1. Eligible Community

The student must belong to a recognised OBC, EBC or DNT category and be able to establish the applicable status through the certificates required by the scholarship process.

These groups are not interchangeable with SC, ST or the general category. A student must use the classification recognised under the relevant government guidelines.

2. Class and School Eligibility

The scholarship supports eligible students studying in Classes 9 to 12 in designated Top Class Schools (TCS).

The selected schools can be government, government-aided or private schools, but the school must have been identified under the ministry's Top Class School scheme.

A recognised school or valid UDISE code by itself does not establish that a school has been selected as a Top Class School. Parents should ask the school nodal officer to confirm its inclusion and available scholarship slots.

3. Family Income

The Top Class School guidelines prescribe household annual income of less than ₹2,50,000 from all sources.

Families should check that their income certificate meets the current portal's requirements and that income details agree with official records.

4. Academic Merit

Selection is based on previous-class examination performance, with state-wise merit and the available scholarship slots determining the outcome.

For new entry at Class 9, Class 8 marks are important; at Class 11, Class 10 marks are important. The final merit procedure is governed by the current application instructions.

About the 60% rule: A government notice in 2023 prescribed 60% marks for applications in that particular selection exercise. The published Top Class School guidelines do not establish a permanent universal 60% qualifying requirement for every later batch. Students should use the marks conditions shown for 2026–27 rather than assuming the historical 2023 condition automatically applies.

5. Available Slots

Scholarships are limited to the sanctioned seats for the relevant state, school and class. Under the published school guidelines, at least 30% of the scholarship slots are reserved for girls.

Official rules: Top Class School Education Guidelines (PDF).

How Much Financial Support Is Available for School Students?

Classes 9 and 10 — Up to ₹75,000 Annually

The maximum is ₹75,000 per student per year for approved school-related expenses, including tuition fees, hostel fees and other permissible charges required by the school.

Classes 11 and 12 — Up to ₹1,25,000 Annually

The maximum is ₹1,25,000 per student per year under the same scheme's approved-expense provisions.

Important difference: These amounts are financial ceilings, not guaranteed cash payments. The actual scholarship is linked to eligible expenses and scheme requirements.

For example, a selected Class 9 student's approved expenses may be lower than ₹75,000. The student should not expect the entire ceiling to be paid simply because the application was approved.

The approved scholarship is transferred under the government's Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) process to the beneficiary's eligible bank account.

Top Class College Scholarship: Eligibility and Benefits

PM-YASASVI also supports students admitted to notified colleges and higher-education institutions under its Top Class College Education component.

College Eligibility

  • Belong to a recognised OBC, EBC or DNT category.
  • Have total annual family income from all sources of not more than ₹2.5 lakh.
  • Secure admission to a full-time prescribed course in an institution notified under the scheme.
  • Meet the course's normal institutional admission and merit requirements.
  • Be selected within the available scholarship slots allocated to the institution.

The published college guidelines provide that 30% of the institution's allotted slots are reserved for eligible girls, according to the stated selection conditions.

Important: Studying in a prestigious college is not sufficient unless the institution and its allocated scholarship slots are on the current official list.

College Financial Assistance

The published guidelines provide for:

  • Tuition and non-refundable charges: As permitted by the scheme. For private-sector institutions, the ceiling is ₹2,00,000 annually; a separate ₹3,72,000 annual ceiling applies to specified commercial pilot training at private flying clubs.
  • Living expenses: ₹3,000 per month under the prescribed conditions.
  • Books and stationery: ₹5,000 per year.
  • Computer or laptop: One-time assistance up to ₹45,000 during the course, including permitted accessories.

Do not confuse college and school benefits. The college scholarship has separate expense categories, requirements and institutional scholarship slots.

Students receiving DBT scholarship funds for institutional fees must follow the scheme's requirement to remit the applicable fees to their institution within the prescribed period.

Official college rules: Top Class College Education Guidelines (PDF).

Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Components

Pre-Matric Assistance

The published consolidated PM-YASASVI framework provides a separate Pre-Matric component for eligible OBC, EBC and DNT students in Classes 9 and 10 at government schools.

Its published allowance is ₹4,000 per academic year, with the state's implementation and eligibility conditions applying.

Post-Matric Assistance

The published Post-Matric component covers eligible study after Class 10, including recognised higher-secondary, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The consolidated framework gives different annual assistance structures for four groups of courses:

  • Group 1: ₹20,000 total prescribed annual assistance for specified professional degree and postgraduate courses.
  • Group 2: ₹13,000 for other covered professional courses.
  • Group 3: ₹8,000 for covered general degree and postgraduate courses.
  • Group 4: ₹5,000 for specified post-Class-10 non-degree courses.

These figures come from the published consolidated scheme framework. Students should check their state's current scholarship instructions for eligibility, course classification, applicable amounts and application dates, rather than using the central Top Class School deadline for a state-run component.

Special Instructions for Rajasthan Students

Rajasthan students are eligible for consideration under the national scheme when they satisfy the relevant component's requirements. However, the current NSP fresh Top Class School announcement specifically excludes Rajasthan from immediate fresh submission.

What Rajasthan school students should do:

  1. Check whether their school is officially identified as a Top Class School.
  2. Prepare the previous-class marksheet, category and income documents.
  3. Complete NSP One-Time Registration if needed.
  4. Ask the school nodal officer about the pending state-specific activation.
  5. Watch for an updated official NSP announcement before submitting a fresh school application.

Do not confuse this restriction with the college scholarship. Top Class College applications have their own national application window ending on 31 October 2026.

How to Apply on the National Scholarship Portal

Students applying for eligible PM-YASASVI components hosted on NSP must use the National Scholarship Portal and complete One-Time Registration (OTR).

  1. Open NSP Student Services.
  2. Generate an OTR number using the official process, or use the student's existing OTR number.
  3. Log in using the OTR credentials.
  4. Choose the academic year 2026–27 and the correct PM-YASASVI component.
  5. Review eligibility and confirm that the relevant application window is available for the student's state and application type.
  6. Enter school or college enrolment details, academic records and required category information.
  7. Provide family-income information and the required bank and identification details.
  8. Upload the supporting records requested by the application form.
  9. Check every entry, then submit the application within the applicable deadline.
  10. Save the submission reference and follow the school or institution verification process.

Important: Creating an OTR does not mean the scholarship application has been submitted. The student must separately complete and submit the appropriate scheme application.

NSP states that OTR registration is free. If students choose assistance from an authorised Common Service Centre, NSP lists a service charge of ₹30 for its assisted scholarship-related services.

Documents and Information to Prepare

Different components and states may require different uploads. Students can prepare these records in advance:

  • Student's Aadhaar or permitted enrolment identification and OTR details
  • Active mobile number
  • Valid OBC, EBC or DNT category documentation as applicable
  • Family-income certificate
  • Class 8, Class 10 or other previous-class marksheet, depending on the application
  • Current school or college admission and enrolment proof
  • Institution code and nodal officer details
  • Bank account details suitable for scholarship DBT
  • College admission merit or rank and fee details for the relevant higher-education component
  • Other documents specifically requested by the current application portal

Verify that the student's name, date of birth, category, Aadhaar and academic records are consistent before submission. Errors can delay institutional verification and payment.

How Are Students Selected?

School Scholarship Selection

The designated schools and state allocation are determined first. Eligible applications are verified by school and state authorities. Scholarships are then awarded according to the applicable state-wise and class-wise merit arrangements and available slots.

The published school guidelines use previous-class examination marks. There is no separate current YASASVI Entrance Test application required for this process.

College Scholarship Selection

Students must first secure admission to an institution included in the ministry's approved list. If eligible applicants exceed the institution's allocated scholarship seats, selection uses the applicable entrance or admission merit.

A student's admission to the institution is not a guarantee that they will receive one of its PM-YASASVI scholarship slots.

Selection updates and application status: Check the official NSP student account.

Can the Scholarship Be Renewed?

Renewal rules differ between components. Continued funding generally depends on eligible enrolment, verification and satisfactory academic progress.

For Top Class College Education, the published rules require students to apply every year, including for renewal. The scholarship can continue through the approved course if the student satisfies the conditions, but it may be terminated if the student fails to be promoted to the next semester or class.

Students receiving school assistance must follow the relevant class-progression and current renewal instructions.

Scholarship overlap: Rules against duplicate assistance vary by component and purpose. The NSP's 2026–27 rules permit applications to some merit-based and welfare-based categories subject to individual scheme eligibility. Students must still comply with restrictions on receiving duplicate funding for the same expenses.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Believing ₹75,000 or ₹1,25,000 is guaranteed cash for every selected student.
  • Applying from a school that is not on the designated Top Class School list.
  • Using the college deadline for a school or state scholarship.
  • Submitting a fresh Top Class School application from Rajasthan before the official portal permits it.
  • Assuming the 60% condition from the 2023 notice automatically applies to every subsequent batch.
  • Confusing OBC, EBC and DNT certification requirements.
  • Generating an OTR but forgetting to submit the actual scholarship application.
  • Ignoring school or college verification after submission.
  • Using an incorrect bank account or unverified Aadhaar seeding for DBT.
  • Paying unofficial websites or agents that promise guaranteed scholarship selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full form of PM-YASASVI?

PM Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India.

Does every student receive ₹1,25,000 per year?

No. ₹1,25,000 is the maximum annual eligible-expense ceiling for selected Class 11–12 students under the Top Class School component. Actual support is subject to approved expenses and scholarship rules.

Can a Class 9 student from Rajasthan apply right now?

The latest NSP announcement says Rajasthan students must wait before submitting fresh Top Class School applications. Students can prepare their documents and check with the school nodal officer for updates.

Can students at private schools qualify?

Yes, under Top Class School Education, if the private school is among the ministry's selected Top Class Schools and the student satisfies all other conditions. Recognition alone is not enough.

Is the PM-YASASVI entrance examination conducted in 2026?

The current Top Class School selection process described by the official scheme uses academic merit and NSP verification. Students should not register for an old YET examination notice as if it were a current 2026–27 application.

Is 60% mandatory for all applicants?

The 60% rule appeared in a 2023 selection notice. It should not be treated as a permanent universal rule for all PM-YASASVI components. Check the current scheme-specific criteria and application instructions.

Is the family-income limit ₹2.5 lakh?

The published Top Class School rules specify household income below ₹2.5 lakh, and the Top Class College rules allow total annual family income up to ₹2.5 lakh. Check the rules for the actual component being claimed.

Can a college student apply?

Yes. PM-YASASVI includes Top Class College Education for eligible students in notified institutions and courses. The 2026–27 NSP application deadline is 31 October 2026.

Is OTR registration the same as a scholarship application?

No. OTR creates a student identity on NSP. The student must still choose the correct scheme and submit the application during its open window.

Where can students check application status?

Students can log in at NSP Student Services to review their scholarship application and verification status.
